Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson began their tournaments at the 10th hole, and the three golfers who have a combined 12 major championships were a combined 22-over par through 12 holes. Mickelson hit every one of his first eight fairways but still carded bogeys on four of his first seven holes. Spieth opened up at 3-over par in his first two holes, but holed the only birdie of the group through nine holes at the 18th. McIlroy, meanwhile, carded three double bogeys in his first 10 holes.

In the other featured group of the morning, Jason Day made the turn at 5-over par with a 40, then fell to 8-over with back-to-back bogeys at 13 and 14. Bubba Watson played a birdie-free opening 14 holes and carded two double-bogeys to drop to 7-over par, and defending champion Brooks Koepka fell to 5-over par after carding a birdie on his first hole of the day.
