The 2020 Academy Awards were a shocking affair, full of betting upsets, and the 2021 edition could follow suit. Here at USAOnlineSportsbooks are here to break down entertainment betting odds and more generally explain what the Academy Awards are. We’ll detail why people bet on the Academy Awards as well as touch on a few of the best practices for doing so.

Many 2021 academy awards gambling guides will focus on the individual odds, which we will touch on. First things first, we are going to start with breaking down what the Academy Awards are, for those of you that are unaware, then we will discuss how to best bet on them. Finally, we will touch on what the betting odds were for some of the major categories like Best Actor, and then what actually happened at the Oscars. As a little bonus, we will also go over some of the fun prop bets on the Academy Awards that are available at online sportsbooks.

What Are The Academy Awards?

The Academy Awards are more commonly known as the Oscars, and they are the premier event in entertainment awards shows. Oscars are legacy-defining awards to get and are treated with the highest level of prestige and sophistication in Hollywood. The Academy Awards are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the members of which include some of the most decorated and impressive filmmakers of our era. The Oscars are the oldest televised worldwide entertainment awards show. The awards were first presented in 1929, and over 3000 of them have been given out to date. It was broadcast via radio beginning in 1930, and over television beginning in 1953.

Betting Legally On The 93rd Academy Awards

So, one problem with the implementation of the legalization of state-sanctioned sports betting is that it is specifically focused on sports betting, and has restrictions on what other events you can bet on. Basically, your local state-sanctioned sportsbook is a sportsbook, and nothing else. No entertainment betting, sometimes even no betting on local college basketball.

The good news is that online sportsbooks, being subject not to the whims of the United States government but instead to their respective local jurisdictions, have far fewer restrictions on what you can place bets on. This means that the likely best place for placing bets on the 2021 Academy Awards is going to be at an online sportsbook, or perhaps several if you see value in shopping lines for this event.

2020 Academy Awards Betting Odds And Results

Best Picture

There was, famously, an upset at the Oscars this year, as Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite took home the coveted Best Picture award, beating out heavy favorite 1917, and making the sportsbooks a ton of money. A foreign film had never won the best picture before, and Parasite broke that streak, being entirely filmed in Korea, and only accessible to English speaking audiences via subtitles.

Best Picture

  • 1917 -275
  • Parasite +300
  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood +650
  • Joker +1400
  • Jojo Rabbit +5000
  • The Irishman +5000
  • Marriage Story +8000
  • Little Women +10000
  • Ford v Ferrari +12500

Best Actor

This category was locked up by Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Joker, where he plays the eponymous Joker, in a supervillain film that touches on the lack of support for the mentally ill and the ways in which people are radicalized. Phoenix was a colossal favorite entering the night and won in an extremely unsurprising manner. The most surprising thing about Phoenix’s win was his speech, which touched on animal and environmental justice.

Best Actor

  • Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) -2500
  • Adam Driver (Marriage Story) +700
  • Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) +2200
  • Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory) +2500
  • Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) +2500

Best Actress

Speaking of colossal favorites, Renee Zellweger’s portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy was a similarly prohibitive favorite in the Best Actress category. Just like Phoenix’s Joker in the previous category, this performance winning was no surprise.

Best Actress

  • Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) +750
  • Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) +900
  • Saorise Ronan (Little Women) +2800
  • Renee Zellweger (Judy) -2000
  • Charlize Theron (Bombshell) +3300

Best Director

Bong Joon Ho again upset Sam Mendes, as he won Best Director with the second shortest odds, at +450, upsetting Mendes’ -900 favorite status. This was a fairly significant upset, but not the most significant one that Parasite or Bong Joon Ho was responsible for on the night.

Best Director

  • Bong Joon Ho (Parasite) +450
  • Sam Mendes (1917) -900
  • Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) +1000
  • Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) +3300
  • Todd Phillips (Joker) +5000

Best Supporting Actor

There were no surprises in the Best Supporting Actor category, as Brad Pitt’s performance in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” took the top spot, and was one of the most prohibitive pre-show favorites. Pitt’s -2500 odds made betting on this category look widely unappealing, and the fact that he won justified that perspective.

Best Supporting Actor

  • Joe Pesci (The Irishman) +800
  • Al Pacino (The Irishman) +1800
  • Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) +2000
  • Brad Pitt (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood) -2500
  • Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes) +3300

Best Supporting Actress

Finally, we have the Best Supporting Actress category, where Laura Dern’s performance in Marriage Story was an enormous favorite at -2200 odds. The next closest performance in this category was Margot Robbie’s turn in Bombshell, and everything else is firmly in dark horse to longshot territory. Of course, Laura Dern won, cementing this as a night of heavy favorites, with the exception, of course, being Bong Joon Ho and Parasite.

Best Supporting Actress

  • Margot Robbie (Bombshell) +800
  • Florence Pugh (Little Women) +1400
  • Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit) +2000
  • Laura Dern (Marriage Story) -2200
  • Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell) +3300

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony is now just a few weeks away. Film fans around the country are beginning to flock to different online sportsbooks to make their wagers for the different category winners. Today, I’m going to break down some of the best 2020 Oscars betting odds being offered online right now.

These odds are being offered by Mybookie.ag. It’s one of the top internet betting sites currently operating in the United States.

There are some fantastic films nominated for different awards this year. I’m not breaking down the odds for every single category. Instead, I’ll be looking at a few of the biggest.

Let’s get into it!

Bet on the 2020 Best Picture Winner

The Academy Awards are filled with a variety of different award categories. There’s no denying the fact that the Best Picture award is the most prestigious. It encapsulates all the other awards and sheds light on the best overall film of the year.

Nine different films are nominated for this award. Here is where the odds for these movies stand.

  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: +200
  • 1917: -180
  • Parasite: +200
  • Joker: +1000
  • The Irishman: +2400
  • Jojo Rabbit: +5000
  • Marriage Story: +5000
  • Little Women: +5500
  • Ford vs. Ferrari: +12500

This is one of the hardest Best Picture awards to predict in recent memory. Some incredible movies were released this year and any one of the nominees could earn this award.

My Prediction

I agree with the odds on this one. 1917 seems the most likely film to be awarded Best Picture. Critics gave the film high acclaim for its script, acting, and unique cinematography that made it look as if everything was filmed in one shot. There are some movies that can certainly pull off the upset here, though.

Parasite was highly praised by critics around the world. It’s a foreign film, though, and it’s rare for non-US films to win the Best Picture award. The Irishman is another possible underdog winner. Scorcese went back to his routes with this film and the results were incredible.

Some disagree with the idea that these are the best 2020 Oscars betting odds. They think other films deserve to be given better odds. That may be true.

With odds of -180, betting on 1917 winning Best Picture is the safe option right now.

Bet On the 2020 Best Director Winner

The Best Director award is another one that movie fans love to wager on. There’s no more prestigious award for a filmmaker. This year, some of the best directors of all time have been nominated for an Academy Award.

The lineup here is incredible. We see directors like Martin Scorcese, who has been in the film industry for decades, and Sam Mendes, who’s just beginning to emerge as a serious force in the movie industry.

Here are the 2020 Best Director betting odds.

  • Sam Mendes: -225
  • Bong Joon Ho: +180
  • Quentin Tarantino: +800
  • Martin Scorcese: +1500
  • Todd Philipps: +3000

This is an interesting one. It’s easy to see why Sam Mendes is listed as the betting favorite. He took an extremely unique take on 1917. The style of the filmmaking here is undeniably a masterpiece.

Bong Joon Ho is also a worthy nominee. Parasite is considered one of the best movies of the past few years and Ho’s directing style gave the film its life.

My Prediction

I’m going with the underdog on this one. Every single director on this list is worthy of an Academy Award. I would’ve liked to have seen more nominees like Taika Waititi and Noah Baumbach. Ultimately, however, I think Martin Scorcese takes home the Oscar this year.

At 77 years old, Scorcese is showing no signs of slowing down. For a time, it looked as if he was taking a slightly different approach to filmmaking. Movies like Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street were fantastic, yet slightly different from what gained Martin his reputation early on.

He went back to the gritty yet artistic style that he used early on in his career with The Irishman. The results were incredible. The movie was certainly a marathon yet the way it came together is something special. With odds of +1500, this one could earn you some serious money.

Bet On the 2020 Best Actor Winner

Every actor dreams of winning an Academy Award. There’s nothing else in the film industry that can compare. Generally speaking, we’re able to see the nominees for this award from a mile away. Other times, an actor’s performance sneaks up on us.

Only five individuals have been nominated for the 2020 Oscar for Best Actor. Despite where the best 2020 Oscars betting odds stand from almost all online betting sites, no one really knows who will win. Each of these men put on incredible performances this year.

Here’s who’s nominated for the award this year.

  • Joaquin Phoenix: -2000
  • Adam Driver: +800
  • Antonio Banderas: +2500
  • Leonardo DiCaprio: +2000
  • Jonathan Price: +5000

When looking back at each of these actor’s performances, you can see why they earned a spot on this list. Each was incredible. Adam Driver showed real emotion as a father in the middle of a tough divorce. DiCaprio excelled as an over-the-hill actor struggling to stay relevant in Hollywood. Price became Pope Francis.

Parasite Oscar Betting Odds Today

This is one that’s entirely subjective. One actor seemed to truly stand out this year, though.

My Prediction

Joaquin Phoenix is, in my opinion, the best actor in the world right now. He takes his roles incredibly seriously and is one of the few individuals out there capable of becoming someone entirely else. Phoenix lost an incredible amount of weight to play Arthur Fleck (The Joker) and put on the performance of his career.

With odds of -2000, this one seems obvious. No other actor took on a role the same way that Joaquin Phoenix did.

Bet On the 2020 Best Actress Winner

Perhaps the best 2020 Oscars betting odds available right now is on the Best Actress award. Five incredible actresses are in the running. Unlike the men’s category, this one seems incredibly hard to predict.

Parasite Oscar Betting Odds

I’m actually a little bit surprised at where the betting odds for this one lie. There are certain performances this year that I believe warrant an Oscar. Here’s where each of the nominees stands in the betting line.

  • Renee Zellweger: -1000
  • Scarlett Johansson: +800
  • Cynthia Erivo: +1600
  • Charlize Theron: +1200
  • Saoirse Ronan: +2000

Renee Zellweger is the betting favorite here by a fairly large margin. She was amazing in Judy, yet the film itself flew somewhat under the radar. Saoirse Ronan finds herself in yet another Oscar slot, this time for her portrayal as Josephine “Jo” March in Little Women.

This is a tough one to bet on. I truly believe that each of the nominees has a real shot at earning the Oscar this year.

My Prediction

Despite entering as an underdog, I think Scarlett Johansson takes home the Academy Award for Best Actress this year. I believe her performance in Marriage Story was one of the best of any this year. It was so believable that at times, it felt uncomfortable.

Zellwegger certainly enters as the favorite, though. She recently won the Female Actor in a Leading Role award at the Screen Actors Guild and many feel she’ll do it again at the Oscars. Only time will tell.
