Which Horse Won The First Melbourne Cup

Posted on

Racing history made as Cross Counter, trained by Charlie Appleby, wins Australia’s biggest race.

The Melbourne Cup is run on the first Tuesday of November every year in Melbourne Australia. The race is so popular in fact that the country has a dedicated public holiday on race day. Run over 3200 meters, the Melbourne Cup actually consists of four races run over the whole day, with the last one being the biggest and most popular.

  • The Melbourne Cup is Australia's most famous annual Thoroughbred horse race. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest.
  • Australian Michelle Payne has become the first female jockey to win Australia's most prestigious horse race, the Melbourne Cup. Has won Australia's most.
  • 2012 MELBOURNE CUP race that stops a nation. Flemington Racecourse Melbourne.

Most races are run over 1200m, which makes the Melbourne Cup a lot harder and more exciting. The Melbourne Cup is open to all horses over the age of three, both international and local. With a purse of 6 million Australian dollars in 2015, the Melbourne Cup attracts hundreds of hopefuls each year for Melbourne Cup betting online.

There are usually about 300 to 400 horses nominated each year to run in the Melbourne Cup. As there are only twenty-four places, that field has to get pared down substantially. This is done by looking at previous race results and other factors. Each horse is then given a handicap depending on their age and abilities.

No handicap can be below 50kg’s, and older horses carry more weight than younger ones as they are physically more mature. This is done so that in essence the field is totally equal; with no one horse having an advantage over another. This leads to many thrilling down to the wire wins.

No one can correctly predict which horse will win the Melbourne Cup, but one can look at previous winners and their pedigrees to get an idea for Melbourne Cup betting online. One of the most famous mares to win the cup for three consecutive years was Maykbe Diva, who was out of a Danehill stallion and a Riverman mare.

She won in 2004, 2005, and 2006, which at the time was remarked upon to be a once in a lifetime event. Prince of Penzance, who is by a Mr Prospector sire, and has a similar dam line to Maykbe Diva, tracing back to Northern Dancer, won the most recent race in 2015.

The favourite for the 2015 race was a stallion called Red Cardeaux. He sadly broke his sesamoid bone during the race and had to drop out, but interestingly he had a pretty unheard of sire line. Protectionist, the 2014 winner, was by Monsun out of a Peintre Celebre mare who also traces back to Northern Dancer in two generations.

Melbourne Cup betting guide:

Betting for first timers can be quite daunting, so we have compiled everything you need to know about reading the formguide and putting a bet on.

WIN

The simplest bet type is also the most popular.

If you predict which horse will win the race you can take the complication out of the equation

and simply back that horse. If it crosses the line first, you are a winner.

Which Horse Won The First Melbourne Cup

In the Melbourne Cup there are 24 runners and you can bet on more than one horse.

PLACE

If you like a runner at big odds, or want to bet more conservatively, then the place bet is for you. Simply select and wager on a horse to finish in the top three.

A win, run second or third lands you in the money. Unlike the win bet, this gives you three times as many chances of collecting, but the return is not as generous.

EACH WAY

Having an each-way bet is splitting equally between a win and place bet.

If you have a $10 each-way bet it will cost you $20 as $10 is put on the win and $10 is on the place.

If you bet on a horse paying $5 the win and $2 the place and it wins you collect $70 as you win on both your win bet and your place bet. If the horse runs second or third you collect $20 as the place portion of the bet is paid.

TRIFECTA

The trifecta requires you to select the runners that will finish first, second and third in a race in the correct finishing order. If you “box” your selections, they can finish first, second and third in any order.

Flexi betting is available so punters can choose the amount they want to bet and get a percentage of the dividend.

FIRST 4

A winning First 4 bet requires you to select the first, second, third and fourth placegetters in the correct finishing order. You can also choose a Box First 4 where the four horses you select can finish in any order.

QUADDIE

To win a Quaddie, you must select the four winners from four consecutive and nominated races. You can select any number of horses in each leg and the cost is calculated by the number of horses selected in each race.

Check the Herald Sun form guide to see the Quaddie legs.

BIG 6

Pick the winners in six nominated races on the card, usually the last six.

The quaddie and the big 6 can be pretty tough to crack but the payouts are usually worth it, especially if you get a couple of roughies up. An important thing to keep in mind is, you can put multiple selections in each race. However, the more selections the more expensive the bet will be. If you’re betting with the TAB, you can also place a “flexi” bet, which enables you to increase your selections on an exotic bet without increasing your outlay. You then receive that percentage of the winnings.

HOW TO READ THE FORMGUIDE

It’s simpler than it looks, don’t worry! The Herald Sun liftout provides all the information you need and then some to have a cheeky flutter on race day.

Beginners need look no further than recent form, weight and price.

It’s usually a good indication on how a horse should perform if all goes to plan. Intermediate punters might also try and incorporate barrier, jockey and trainer into their calculations.

Melbourne

The detailed form inside the guide is handy also if you know what to look for amid all text and numbers. Beginners need not get bogged down in ‘Last 600m’ times and the like, but look at margins and the small summary at the bottom of each extract. The summary can provide an insight into how a horse travelled in recent races including any interference which may have impacted on the result.
